There is one quick and easy tactic that you can use to tell if anyone is lying to your face.
All it entails is asking the person a question that you already know the answer to.
Since you know the answer, you will be able to determine A) if that person is capable of lying to your face and B) the little signs and unique ticks that they do when they lie so that when you ask them a question that you don't know the answer to, you can always tell from their body language if they're lying.
Let's say, for example, you ask the person if they've ever filed for bankruptcy and you know from a quick Google check that they have.
If they lie to you about it and look down as they do it, then you will know that their “tell” when they lie is looking down.
Now, everything you know about lying when it comes to the narcissist is almost the opposite.
For example, many people don't look people in the eyes when they lie because they feel a lot of shame when they lie.
Narcissists don't feel shame.
In fact, they build their entire lives around lies, so they might make more eye contact with you when they're telling a lie, just so that it's more believable.
Everybody has their own unique fingerprint of things that they do when they lie.
Some people will elongate their sentences.
Some people will look up to the right, some will look up to the left.
Some people will turn their backs to you.
Some will scratch their noses.
Some people will talk in a different way.
Some people will only use hypothetical.
Some people will just stick to the facts.
It's up to you when you ask a series of questions to these people to understand exactly what their method of lying is.
The other crucial part of this is if you catch them in a lie, never tell them what you did.
Do not say “I asked you the question, but I already knew the answer.”
Do not say “I know when you lie because you touch your nose,” because they will immediately switch their tactics up.
Here's a quick real-world example of this:
I was at a business dinner with two people. Let's say one of them was Jim.
Jim was definitely a narcissist and I was going to a few different restaurants with these people during this business meeting. Now, at every restaurant, Jim would pay for the group and give his credit card.
Finally, when Jim was in the bathroom, one of the other people informed me that they were Venmoing him for the money for their drinks and food.
Now when I got Jim back at the table, I wanted to see how he lied, so I asked him in private, Wow, that's really nice of you to pay for everyone's meals, why are you doing that?
And he said because it's something nice to do.
I knew he wasn't actually paying for the meals and now I knew what he looks like when he lies.
